    Essentials of Inventive Thinking

    Dr. Behrokh Khoshnevis

    University of Southern California

    About the Seminar:

Great engineering systems, processes and products are usually based largely on the exercise of inventive thinking and not on routine procedures for engineering analysis and optimization. Research and development could conservatively aim at making marginal improvements to the state-of-the-art in the chosen domain, or it may be based on original and novel ideas and potentially lead to breakthrough impacts and discovery of new frontiers. Creative engineers and researchers use inventive, non-routine approaches and in most instances their creations clearly stand out. Inventive thinking and problem solving enriches professional life and brings prosperity to organizations and society. Creativity in technology, i.e., the ability to invent, can be acquired and enhanced.

This seminar intends to inspire the participants with a strong motivation and some knowledge to take the path of inventive thinking and to initiate and pursue novel ideas that lead to successful creation of new products, processes, and systems. Some basic aspects of entrepreneurship and company startup will also be presented.

About the Speaker: Behrokh “Berok” Khoshnevis Biography

Behrokh Khoshnevis is the Louise L. Dunn Distinguished Professor of Engineering and is the Director of the Center for Rapid Automated Fabrication Technologies (CRAFT) at the University of Southern California. He is also the President and CEO of Contour Crafting Corporation. He is active in robotics, and mechatronics related research and development projects that concern several novel Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) processes such as Contour Crafting large-scale fabrication, SIS, which is licensed to HP for fabrication of polymeric and metallic parts and SSS for fabrication of high temperature alloys, ceramics and composites, as well as development of mechatronics systems for biomedical applications (e.g., digital dental prostheses fabrication, robotics for orthodontics, rehabilitation engineering, and tactile sensing devices), autonomous mobile and modular robots for fabrication and assembly on Earth, in space and on other planets, and specialized innovative equipment for oil and gas as well as renewable energy industries. He has numerous inventions and over 100 US and international patents as well as nearly 200 refereed technical publications.

He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineering, a Fellow of the Society for Computer Simulation and a NASA Innovative Advanced Concept Fellow. He has won several awards including the Khwarizmi International Award (KIA Laureate), USC School of Engineering Senior Research award, Pete Lohman Best Engineering Alumni award, and Sharif University of Technology One of Top 50 (among ~50,000) Alumni Award.

Because of his Contour Crafting invention he received the 2014 Grand Prize among 1000+ globally competing technologies in a competition organized by NASA. Contour Crafting was selected earlier as one of the top 25 out of more than 4000 candidate inventions by the History Channel Modern Marvels program and the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame; and has been identified as one of the major disruptive technologies of our time by the renowned Harvard Professor, Clayton Christensen, who coined the term “disruptive technology”.

Dr. Khoshnevis’ another 3D printing invention, Selective Separation Shaping (SSS) won another international competition Grand Prize by NASA in 2016 as the most capable and versatile metallic and ceramic Additive Manufacturing technology for micro-gravity and planetary applications.

He was recognized in 2017 by the Connected World magazine as one of top 10 pioneers in the Internet of Things (IoT). Connected World has celebrated luminaries such as Elon Musk as other IoT pioneers.

Dr. Khoshnevis’ inventions routinely receive extensive worldwide publicity in acclaimed media such as New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Business Week, Der Spiegel, New Scientist, and major national and international television and radio networks. His TEDx talk on the subject of automated construction has been viewed more than one million times and was selected by the TED organization as one of five TEDx Moments among over 30,000 presentations.

Dr. Khoshnevis’ educational activities at USC include the teaching of a popular graduate course on Invention and Technology Development. He routinely conducts lectures and seminars and gives keynote speeches on the subject of invention.

    Salam,

Tomorrow (May 12) is the anniversary of the late Maryam Mirzakhani, Iranian-American mathematician and SUT alumna. There is a free projection of a documentary about her available tomorrow by Zala Films, followed by a panel discussion. It is free, but registration is required. I just watched the trailer, and it looks like a great documentary (available on the same Zala Films link).

Hope that you can watch; and also hope that you and your loved ones are safe during this pandemic.

    Best regards

    Bahram Zahir

    Dear SUTA Associates,

During the past five months the reunion committee of our board has been working on a plan for Reunion-2020 and as of now the committee has prepared detailed plan and budget for this event to be held in Northern California in August. However, in light of the recent developments in COVID-19 pandemic and uncertainties of this situation over the next few months, the committee has recommended to postpone this event.

We are committed to provide a healthy and safe environment for our community and members. Also, we want to let you know that the Reunion-2020 is an important program for Board-10 and we like to go ahead with our plan to hold this event later when it's possible. We are watching the situation with COVID-19 closely and will announce the venue and the date as soon as we are assured of safety and well-being of our guests. Please check suta.org routinely and we will keep you informed of our plan.
